The Meridian Co-Op is about to be reimagined.
On Aug. 8 at noon, the final phase of the mural, a community art project, will be revealed at the co-op breezeway and celebrated. Designed by multidisciplinary artist Kinga Zak and painted by Dallas Hofsten, the project was funded by the Downtown Hamilton Creative Placemaking Grant.
According to a press release there will be a ribbon cutting to pair with the mural reveal. After, there will be a celebration that joins dance, music, food and art overall. Ensemble Topaz, Romani Lud Ludi, Nicole Lamb and the salsa community will perform a wide variety of dances ranging from Bengali, Afghan, Polish, Romani and salsa. There will also be a drumming circle focusing on African instrumentation and a swing dance DJ and lessons to end the day.
Placemaking is a hands-on approach to changing and making an impact on a neighbourhood, inspiring people to collectively reimagine or reinvent public spaces. Interacting with unique attributes to a location, it’s a way to make residents feel ownership of their public spaces and use them in a way the community wants or needs.
The city’s placemaking grant was designed to fund new projects that temporarily animate public places in the downtown core.
According to the release there will be a barbecue, face painting, bubble station, chalk art and games at this free-to-attend event. Attendees can RSVP in advance on the event’s Eventbrite page.
